How the Government Shutdown Could Affect Your Social Security Claim

Oct 3, 2013 |

We’re on day three of the government shutdown that began Tuesday, Oct. 1 after the House and the Senate did not agree on a bill to fund the government.

While the term “shutdown” sounds like a complete halt on government functions, not everything has been affected. For instance, mail is still being delivered and Social Security checks are still being written.

Although the Social Security Administration is keeping enough staff on hand to keep checks going out, the agency does not have enough employees for everything. This means new hearings for disability cases are not being scheduled and there could be delays in processing new disability applications.

If you are in the middle of a disability claim appeal, the government shutdown could have some affect on your case. See the Social Security Administration’s official statement for more details, and call Bentoff & Duber at 216-861-1234 or submit a contact form if you have any questions. We have lawyers who are highly experienced in social security benefits and can help navigate through any concerns you may have.
