The Cleveland Indians have reached a settlement with the widow of Douglas Johnson, 54, of Pennsylvania, who died nine days after being struck by an inflatable slide outside of Progressive Field.
The Indians have chosen not to disclose the amount for which the settlement was reached. The widow also received a judgment of $3.5 million with National Pastime Sports, the company that was responsible for setting up the slide.
Douglas Johnson was attending the Cleveland Indians game on June 12, 2012 when the inflatable slide set up for “Kids Fun Day” fell on top of him. Johnson broke three bones in his back and died nine days later after suffering a pulmonary embolism caused by the fractures and inactivity.
Johnson’s widow sued the Cleveland Indians, National Pastime Sports, and several other parties claiming negligence and wrongful death.
National Pastime Sports was said to not have properly secured the slide and was cited for setting up the slide in an unsafe and negligent manner. Johnson also settled with Progressive Insurance, who had an off-the-clock employee on the slide when it collapsed.
