Tips when filing a claim and how to receive proper compensation

You are driving safe and keeping your eyes on the road, when all of the sudden you realize, through the adrenaline and shock, you have been in a car accident. It is an experience no one wants to go through, but happens all too often. According to a report by the Insurance Information Institute, an estimated 2.3 million people were injured in motor vehicle accidents in 2014. With statistics like these on the rise, it is more important than ever to know what to do after a car accident.

There are many scenarios that can occur when in a car accident, from who is at fault to potential insurance rate increases or loss. In this post, we will look at filing a claim, working with an insurance adjuster and what next steps may be necessary.

What is the First Step after a Car Accident?
There are many steps to take after you are in a car accident. For example, call the police and complete a police report, and then contact your insurance carrier and put them on notice of the accident.

You should also take the following actions after an accident:

  • Take photos of the accident at the scene.
  • Look for witnesses and ask them to speak with the police at the scene.
  • Fill out a comprehensive police report.
  • Obtain information from the driver at fault including name, address, phone number and insurance carrier

It is also best to speak with an attorney before filing a claim with your insurance carrier.
Negotiating with a seasoned claims adjuster can be quite daunting and challenging and therefore it’s always recommended to speak with an attorney before giving a statement or working with an adjuster.
