Salmonella Outbreak Causes Peanut Butter Recall to Reach 76 Products

Written by on Thursday, October 11, 2012 at 1:35pm

The New Mexico-based company, Sunland Inc., has expanded their recall to 76 types of peanut and almond butter products after a product that was sold to Trader Joe’s groceries was connected to an outbreak of salmonella.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have linked 29 salmonella illnesses in 18 states to Trader Joe’s Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter, forcing Sunland Inc. to recall the products under multiple brand names. Sunland Inc. is responsible for manufacturing and packaging the Trader Joe’s peanut butter.

Katalin Coburn, spokeswoman for Sunland Inc., stated that the company recalled the other peanut and almond butter products because they were made with the same equipment as the Trader Joe’s product. However, none of the other products have been linked to salmonella.

Trader Joe’s has recalled the Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter that was manufactured between May 1 and September 24, 2012. Coburn stated that the FDA and CDC are currently in the process of inspecting the New Mexico plant.

Those who have been diagnosed with salmonella-related illnesses claimed to have been feeling ill sometime between June 11 and September 2. More than 75% of those with illnesses were children under the age of 18 and no deaths have been reported.
Here is a list of the brands included in the recall:

• Archer Farms
• Earth Balance
• Fresh & Easy
• Heinen’s
