Walking into Work
If you’ve read our previous blog post on workers’ compensation coverage when traveling to and from work, you know that injuries that happen on the drive into work are typically not covered by workers’ compensation but ones that happen once you park and begin walking into work may be covered. In all situations, it’s best to contact an attorney to make sure all factors are considered when determining whether you should file a claim.
Company Sports Leagues
Employers sometimes sponsor company sports teams in local leagues such as volleyball, kickball or softball to help build team camaraderie and boost staff morale. If an employee is injured while playing on one of these teams, in some cases, he or she should file a workers’ compensation claim.
These injuries can be covered under the law if the employee can prove that the team was created to benefit the employer, and the employer is sponsoring the entire activity by supplying the entry fees and other financial backing. Most of the time, employers have team members sign a waiver that releases the employer from all responsibility tied to potential injuries, which they’re permitted to do. Signing this waiver could prevent the employee from being covered under workers’ compensation.
